Christmas Tea 2008

Thank you to all the ladies who made this year's Christmas Tea such a beautiful day.

The tables were lovely and the fellowship was sweet.

Our theme this year was "Silent Night, Holy Night".

Lara Gillman taught a devotional study reminding us to "choose the better" and seek quiet times with our Lord.

We pray that you, too, will seek the Lord during this busy Christmas season and throughout the coming new year!

The Central and Northern California Women's Conference will be held October 18th at Calvary Chapel Modesto.

God humbled us with His mercy and love and filled us with His grace.

Saturday Fellowship Notes -February

Kevin was sharing last Sunday about how God used John’s exile to the island of Patmos to pen the Book of Revelation…Well, I have been exiled to the kitchen with an English book.

So, this study is an English lesson as well as a Bible lesson.

I’m going to diagram John 13:34. I believe the structure of the sentence illustrates the meaning for us with startling clarity.

John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

So often when we read a command like this we look up from the page and say, “Yes, that’s right! We should…” or “He should…”

But NO! This verse says, “YOU”. That pronoun is meant to take the place of the name of the person reading the command. Put your name there and no one else’s!

Think for a moment. How did/does Jesus love you? To what degree?
Honestly, if I were to try to make a list, I would miss 90% of the “hows”, “wheres”, “whens”, and “to what degree” of Jesus love for me. Yet, that is the very way we are commanded to love one another.

This phrase “love one another” 11 times in the New Testament!

Agape! What does agape love look like?

Luke 6:27-35
"But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
"bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.
"To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.
"Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.
"And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
"But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
"And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
"And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
"But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.

“The kind of love described by the Greek word agape is defined by Edward Nason West as ‘a profound concern for the welfare of another without any desire to control that other, to be thanked by that other, or to enjoy the process.’ It gives itself. It lays down its life.”

“To aim at loving instead of being loved require sacrifice. Love reaches out, willing to be turned down or inconvenienced, expecting no personal reward, wanting only to give.”

“The unavoidable fact…is that this ‘impossible” standard is the standard. There is no other standard by which we are to measure our love. ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ Jesus said.”

God gives us the ability to do the things He commands us to do! But it requires a voluntary yielding of our stubborn will to His Holy Spirit. It requires a continual refilling of His Holy Spirit.

Parable of the 10 Virgins (Matt 25:1-12)
"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
"At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
"Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
"'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
"But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
"Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
"But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'

Oil in the scriptures represents the Holy Spirit.

The picture that I want to focus on here is that we must not think that just because we have been filled with the Holy Spirit once in the past, that it will be good enough for the test of today. We must keep a good supply on hand by reading the Bible daily (getting to know the Lord by His Word) and communicating with Him in prayer.

And also notice they were told to “go and buy for themselves”. No one could do it for them. Even when you “go to those who sell oil” (Bible studies, etc…), you must take it for yourself and put it in your lamp.

I think the main reason we have problems with really loving the people God has put in our lives is we are trying to do it in our own power. We are like a candle (self consuming) and not like a lamp (powered by an external Source) that can be continually refilled without extinguishing the flame.

God has provided all we need to obey His command “Love one another as I have loved you”. Won’t you let Him pour His oil into you? Just ask Him. You can be sure that when you do, a test will come. You always have the choice to obey the command to love or not, but when you choose to lay down your life, you’ll be surprised how God gives you the ability to really do it!

In closing, I’d like to retell a story from Corrie Ten Boom’s book Tramp for the Lord. Some years after being released from the Nazi concentration camp, Corrie was sharing at a large church service when she recognized a man who had been one of the guards at the concentration camp. She saw him approaching at the end of the service and knew she still harbored unforgiveness in her heart. She prayed, “Lord help me!” She knew the Lord wanted her to take this man’s hand, but did not think she could make herself do it. So, she continued to pray, “Lord help me!” When the man was in front of her, she reached out her hand and took his. She says that then, and not one second before, she was filled with forgiveness and honest love for this man.

So it is with us. The biggest battle, and the one we must choose to win, is the battle with our own self-will. When we choose to obey God’s will over our own, we stand in awe of our Lord and are filled to overflowing with His love and blessing.

New Direction for Women’s Ministry: Discipleship

F.A.T. Chicks (faithful, available, teachable): These are the things that it takes to grow in a discipling relationship.

My vision for this new Women’s Ministry is that each of you would be meeting on a weekly basis at a more intimate level with one or two or even three other women, doing a Bible study, reading the Word together, or praying together. Then once a month on a Saturday we all will come together for a time of fellowship, devotional teaching, and sharing what God is doing in our lives.

Response Cards: I have singled out some women, who I have observed to be F.A.T., and asked them if they would lead the smaller group studies. When you return your response card to me, I will pair you off with one of them. You will decide together when you will meet and what kind of study to do.

Ephesians 4:14-15 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
